www.nma.tv A New York Times article reports that Google is researching new, highly-innovative technologies in a secret facility dubbed “Google X.” Its exact location is unknown, as sources say the work done by Google X is as guarded as the international espionage work performed by the CIA. Among the projects rumored to be in development is a so-called “space elevator,” which could ferry people and equipment between the Earth and outer space without the use of rockets. More grounded ideas include wiring household appliances like light bulbs and coffee pots to the Internet so they can be controlled remotely. Google is even said to be preparing its driverless car technology, which the company began testing on California roads last year, for a broad consumer push. There is also a large emphasis on artificial intelligence and robot technology that goes far beyond just “Android.” Google has reportedly enlisted the help of some of the world’s brightest minds from top companies like Microsoft and Nokia and educational institutions like Carnegie Mellon and MIT. Sebastian Thrun, Andrew Ng and Johnny Chung Lee are all said to be working on high-concept initiatives. Despite the press, the very existence of Google X has not been acknowledged by the company’s top brass, Sergery Brin and Larry Page. Sources at Google who spoke to The Times about the project did so under condition of anonymity.

Sync Google Calendar Across Multiple Applications

Using CalDav support in Google Calendar, you can synchronize your Google Calendar with virtually any Desktop Calendar Program or Mail Client (across platforms) for free.

Let’s take a comprehensive look at how to set up syncing between Google Calendar and your favorite calendar application.

Syncing Microsoft Outlook with Google Calendar

Google Calendar Sync, a free application that provides bidirectional and unidirectional syncing between Microsoft Outlook and Google Calendar. Here’s how to get it working:

1. Download and install Google Calendar Sync.

2. Enter your Google account email address and password to login.

3. Select your preferred sync method and sync frequency.

4. Hit “Save” and you’re done!

Syncing iCal with Google Calendar

Google’s utility called Calaboration handles iCal-to-Google Calendar sync setup with ease. With Calaboration, you can quickly and easily set up bi-directional syncing between iCal and Google Calendar with just a few clicks of your mouse. Just run it once to set up your calendar syncing and you shouldn’t need to run it again until you need to add a different calendar.

But here’s how to perform the sync manually with iCal through the CalDAV remote calendar standard.

Note: Setting up iCal with GCal varies slightly based on whether you’re using your default Google calendar or a secondary calendar. First, here’s how to set up your default Google Calendar with iCal:

1. Open iCal, then go to Preferences (iCal -> Preferences or Cmd-,).

2. Here, click on the “Accounts” tab, and then click on the ‘+’ button to add a new remote calendar.

3. Name the calendar, then enter your Google account username and password.

4. Click on Server options to display the Account URL text box. For your default calendar, enter the following URL:

]]>

https://www.google.com/calendar/dav/username@gmail.com/user

…replacing username@gmail.com with yours.

Once you’ve done that, just hit “Add” iCal will download all your events and you’re good to go!

If you want to add a secondary calendar, the steps are exactly the same as above with one small difference. Instead of your email address in the Account URL as described in step 4, you need to replace that with the calendar ID for that specific calendar. You can find it by opening Google Calendar, clicking the on arrow next to the calendar you want to sync, and selecting Calendar settings. In the settings, find the Calendar Address section near the bottom of the page (which is formatted like an email address)  and put it in place of username@gmail.com in the above mentioned URL.

Syncing Mozilla Sunbird and Thunderbird with Google Calendar

Whether you’re using Mozilla’s standalone calendar application Sunbird or Mozilla’s email client, Thunderbird with the Lightning extension that integrates Sunbird into Thunderbird, calendar syncing between either application and Google Calendar is a breeze.

1. Download and install the Provider for Google Calendar extension on Sunbird or Thunderbird. Once installed, restart the application.

2. Now, in Sunbird, go to File > New Calendar; in Thunderbird, first switch to calendar view and then go to File > New > Calendar.

3. In the “Create new calendar” wizard, select “On the Network” and hit “Continue”.

4. Choose Google Calendar as the calendar type.

The Location field requires the XML address of your Google Calendar, which you can get by opening Google Calendar and choosing Calendar settings from the drop-down next to the calendar you want to sync. At the bottom of the settings page, you’ll see the Private Address section. Copy the XML URL and paste it into the Location field in Sunbird or Thunderbird.

5. On hitting “Continue”, you’ll be asked for your Google Account’s username and password. Enter it, give your new calendar a name, and hit Continue. You’re done!

From now on, any event you add to that calendar will automatically sync to Google Calendar and vice versa.

Syncing Your Mobile Device with Google Calendar

You can check out Google Sync for your phone, an app made by Google specifically for Google Calendar-to-Mobile Device syncing using Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync protocol. The app is currently supported by Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, Windows Mobile, SyncML and Nokia S60.

Here’s a short video explaining how Google Sync works with Mobile Devices:

Alternatively, a free, open-source application called GCalSync does bidirectional syncing between Google Calendar and tons of supported phones.
